Iwona Van Niekerk is a Polish–Australian artist based in Perth, Western Australia. Born in Słupsk, Poland, she has also lived in Copenhagen and London, experiences that continue to inform her artistic practice and visual perspective.
Working primarily in oil on linen, Van Niekerk combines abstraction and figuration to explore memory, identity and belonging. Inspired by the colours and geological formations of Western Australia's red earth, she uses geometric structures and the female figure to create layered compositions that reflect the invisible experiences and histories we carry within us.
Her paintings balance intuitive mark-making with structured forms, inviting viewers to pause, reflect and form their own personal connection with the work.
In 2023, Van Niekerk received the Public Choice Award at the City of Stirling Art Awards and Exhibition. She is a member of Art Conversations WA, the Western Australian Society of Arts, Mundaring Arts Centre and Ellis House Art Centre.
