BIO
Iwona Van Niekerk is a Polish-born artist who began her artistic journey in Poland and has lived in Copenhagen, London, and now Perth, Australia. She began studying Fine Art at Curtin University but has paused her studies for now to focus on her studio practice and exhibitions. She is an active member of Art Conversations WA, Mundaring Arts Centre, and Ellis House Art Centre.
Her work blends elements of figurative painting, cubism, surrealism, illusion, and abstraction — often weaving symbolic and geometric forms into compositions that invite personal interpretation. Squares and structural elements frequently appear in her work, rooted in an early fascination with architectural shapes and cubic forms.
Iwona’s paintings explore themes of femininity, identity, and emotional depth, often expressed through abstract figurative representations of the female form. She seeks to create art that opens space for introspection, inviting viewers to discover new meanings with each encounter.
Her recent series, A Journey of Power and Presence, continues this exploration through abstract figurative paintings that reflect transformation, quiet strength, and female resilience.
In 2023, she was awarded the Public Choice Award at the City of Stirling Art Exhibition. Her creative inspirations include the poetic beauty of rural Poland, Scandinavian design, and the dynamic art scenes she has experienced across Europe and Australia.
